The disease takes a weird turn
« on: January 07, 2013, 06:47:38 PM »
So, I go to look at a nice Invader that was for sale today not far from my house. Get there and find out the guy has always wanted one and this one just isnt running right, with a couple other little issues. He had a few old sleds of various manufacture and I could tell he was a good vintage guy. I think he was just frustrated with it and was giving up and selling it since he didnt know Kawasaki's. It was a nice sled and could be back up and running with just a little work.
-Whats the best thing to do in this situation?
1. Talk him down and buy the nice sled?
2. Leave and forget about it?
3. Offer to help him fix his dream sled?

Yeah, the disease is bad. I offered to help him fix it.

He was excited to hear this and took me up on the offer. So, hopefully we get started on it this weekend. I will get a friend out of the deal and another Invader will be back on the snow!

You know....I would have had the same dilemma if I was in your shoes! I like the choice you made. Keep us posted on how it all turns out!!
1979 Kawasaki Invader 440 (10,000+ miles, but she wears them well!)
1980 (or maybe '79?) Kawasaki Drifter 440 (My first sled, and I still own it!)

Nothing wrong with helping out someone. There are plenty of invaders out there so you will have another chance to find a nice one.

I just got back home after working on my new friends Invader. The guy he got it from said he had the crank seals a few years ago. So, I thought we should just try to get it going without pulling the motor. Did a compression check, and got  120 psi a side. Pulled the carbs and gave them a thorough cleaning. Hooked the oil injection back up (I still dont understand why people unhook them). Fixed a couple leaks with clamps on coolant lines. Re-tourqed the heads. Each was quite loose and needed about a half turn per nut. That sealed the head gasket leaks. Put her all back together and it fired right up and idled at 3000! Synched the carbs and this thing is ready for snow. He needs to do some little fixes and replace the skid, but at least it runs great now. Good Karma indeed.  8)
