Hi Guys

Hi,

I recently bought a coil set (Parts Unlimited p/n 01-115) for my 79 Kawasaki Drifter 440.  My manual shows that for stock, resistances for the Pulser/Exciter Coils should be ~ 128 ohms and ~ 23 ohms.  I have just installed the new coils and measure 22 ohms and 24 ohms on these coils.  I have my old coils on the bench here and they measure out fine right now but are bad.  Is this correct for the new aftermarket coils or is my new coil set faulty, you think?  I emailed the manufacturer, Parts Unlimited, and am waiting on a response.

UPDATE:
Well I tested the voltage output of the coils.  I got about 6.5 Vac on each coil instead of ~ 4 Vac and ~ 40 Vac.  Damn.  No spark to the plug either of course.  Atleast when my sled would run randomly I'd get 4 Vac and 32 Vac on the coils.

Just a heads up for anybody needing coils...

I talked to a tech at DennisKirk.com about my recent purchase from them (pulser/exciter coil set).  He said that he had heard of this exact issue way too many times with this manufacturer "Parts Unlimited."  Coils are nowhere near what spec is.  He said not to even bother with trying to get an echange from this manufacturer.  I'm now scouting a NOS or used set of internal coils, and hope that fixes my problem.

I think I have some NOS coils.  Do you know what part numbers you are looking for?

Cool.  The numbers stamped on the coils themselves are "147G27" for the smaller/pulser coil and 147H20 on the bigger/exciter coil.  I haven't found any other kawasaki part numbers though.

I did find an ebay seller that had a stator assembly with the above coil marking and I just bought it, so I'm hoping that the coils are good.  What are the part numbers you have?  Do you know the differences between the other types?  They physically look the same.

WORDS OF WISDOM - Do not buy ignition coils made by Parts Unlimited.

I installed an ebay-ordered Kawasaki coil set (pulser / exciter) and initially the sled ran like what seemed to be normal / good.  After a couple minutes, the no power condition happened again.  I checked the ignition coil resistances this time and its secondary was up near 83 KOhms and slowly climbed and dropped evnetually when cooling off.  This coil is a Parts Unlimited brand also and I installed it last year as a hopeful fix.  I installed the kawasaki original ignition coil (which measured a solid 10.2 - 10.3 KOhms: in spec) and the sled idles smoother than i can remember.  Plan on testing the ride this weekend.
