Intruder won't shut down
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:18:57 PM »
We have not had very many runs with the dual exhaust Intruder.  But on two occasions now once she warms up she won't shut down.  The obvious thought is that our engine connector has come loose - however it appears to be seated properly and all of the terminals appear to be in place and seated properly.  Our snow is shot so I don't know if we will get another run in.  But I am interested to know if anyone has ever had a similar problem.

Man up Mark and pull the spark plugs off to get the sled shut down.

The only thing that happens with the key and the kill switch is they ground out the system.  I have had some of the connectors fuze some and not have such a good connection of the wires.

With the motor running and the main plug undone it is possible to jump the black wire and one of the other of the four and it kills the motor. (not yellow not yellow/black)  this leaves the others not on the tip of my tongue.  If you do it by hand you get a good lesson why to use the kill switch/key or if all else fails choke the motor to death (hand over the carburetors.

Hey Mark

So cold the switches shut it down fine?

How long does it have to run before it will not shut down?

sounds like bad connection or poor ground at connector or wires going to stator

Tom, I agree, sounds like a bad connection.  The confusing thing to me is that it works fine cold.  After a ride it just sits there and won't shut off.  All other functions appear to work correctly.

Lloyd, I am not sure how long until there is a problem.  This is only the third run for this sled.  Two runs of about 15 minutes and one run of about 5 minutes.  It was after the 15 minute runs that she would not shut down.

Mark, I will need do check the wires for continuity to be sure they are all doing what they are supposed to do.

I would think there is a poor connection on a ground some place.

It could be hard to find when it works fine cold.

It will be interesting to see what it is.

No clear answers yet.  However in checking the wiring I did find that we had a hole in the impulse line.  I am hard pressed to understand how it would pump fuel with that leak.

The picture is getting more and more peculiar.  Took the sled out this afternoon and just like before, after a couple of miles she would not shut off.  Played with the connectors a bit and did not make any progress.  Used the enrichener to shut her down.  Started back up and it worked properly again.  Drove home and would not shut down again.  More dignostic work to follow...

It sounds more and more like it can only be a poor connection.  Ground wire needs cleaning or wiring connection.  Does the key turn the sled off or are you just using the kill toggle?  If both will not kill the motor the connection that must be faulty is the wire block on the motor.  Wire block or Ground.
