Got the gear off with a puller. Of course it didn't fit, nor did the 2 cheap ones I thought might. I was able to get the puller to grip on the old seal behind the gear and thought I may be able to get it that way. I ended up literally pulling the old seal over the gear with the puller, 1/2 at time as it was split, and then I was able to use the puller as I thought it would work originally. I have found you have to get creative during this. Now I can concentrate on putting on the new seals after cleaning up the crank and case, and then finally completing the top end. Its now completely tore down and I couldnt have done it without this site. What a journey thus far. Thanks for everyone's assistance helping a guy who has never done anything like this.
