Fuel/Oil Injection Issue
« on: March 02, 2015, 06:17:44 AM »
So I finally took my 79 Invader 40 on its maiden voyage yesterday after changing all the fluid and running with new plugs. To be sure the oil injection system was working I ran a small amount of premix in the gas just to be safe. Everything was going smooth and the sled was running great for about 1.5 hrs. We were on our way home off the lake and took a different route leading us up a decent sized hill that was rather steep. My friends 440 Intriguer made it up and just as I was about to make it to the top it bogged out and died. Checked fuel and tank was 1/4 fallout added about 3 gallons of non premix. checked for fuel going to carbs ok, new fuel line was just installed and no leaks to suck air. I removed the plugs and they were saturated with oil, cleaned off and tried to start. We only had 1 more good set & installed those with no luck as they were soaked again. Blew some ether in the chambers to dry up some oil and let it sit. I removed the left hand carb & fuel bowel. Their didn't seem to be anything wrong with it and it looked clean. Disconnected oil injection line & ended up getting the sled to run, ran it for a few minutes and everything seemed fine. I hooked the oil line back up to the pump and the sled ran for about 2 minutes and did the same thing. I didn't want to run with out the oil line on because by now most of my gas in my tank was not mixed. The only other issue was as I was riding the hill sideways the sled almost tipped to the left side once but I stuck my foot out and kept it from going over. What do you guys suggest, other than new plugs and non mixed fuel? Id like to utilize the oil injection but if their may be an issue and now its over oiling for some reason I could disconnect and just run pre mixed gas. Sorry for the novel but the thing ran great for over an hour.

Did the sled smoke badly?  If the pump is over injecting the engine will smoke noticeably.

If not jetted correctly for the conditions I have found these sleds to have some trouble on steep hill pulls.  There is a tendency to load up when the carbs are fairly wide open but ground speed is restricted.  At that point I try to turn around and get a fresh running start.

It smoked badly at first but once it ran for a couple minutes and once I was on the ice it ran perfect and smoke free. I shut it off a few times and always 1 pull to start it back up. We had it running Friday night and we rode yesterday. When I was able to get the sled started again it smoked badly for a few minutes until it burnt out all the fuel. Everything was fine until that hill. I did notice that their was unburnt oil coming out of the exhaust where the chamber meets the header at the springs.

It is not uncommon to have an oil leak at that joint if it is not sealed.  Next time you put it together use a little high temp RTV on the joint.

If the engine is not smoking badly then I wouldn't think that you have a oil injection problem.  Unless the pump is plugged, a pump failure would move too much oil into the engine.

How has it run since the hill?  Is it running normal?

So after we finally got it off the hill and back into his garage I disconnected the oil line to the oil pump and pinched it off. My gas still had a little premix so I cleaned off the plugs and tried to get it started, I did this a few times and the more I did this the less oil on the plugs. Finally it popped off so I let it run for a few minutes as I worked the throttle to build up rpm. I decided to hook the oil line back up and give it a shot. It made maybe 1/8 of a mile and bogged out and died. I did not have anytime to mess with it but a few people here at home are telling me to cap off the oil injection pump and run just premix. I was going to suck out the gas tank and run 100% non pre mixed gas and hook up the oil line and try it before I mess with the oil pump. Not sure which one to try first haha.

I glanced in there briefly and it seemed ok. To bad its the end of winter. May have to drive it around the grass to make sure I get it fixed lol.
