1980 drifter f/a drag set up
« on: January 10, 2015, 06:47:45 PM »
Hi I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to drag race a 340 f/a in f stock and if they are competitive?  I am in the process of rebuilding the motor and was planning on running a powerbloc clutch, but cant find a listing for weights.  Do the 340 f/a use close to the same weights as the 340 fans?  Also, what are they geared like?  We race on packed snow usually around 660 ft.  What is max rpm the stock motor should run at?

Welcome to the site!!  The 340 F/A is listed at 28 hp and is the least hp Kawasaki put in a sled.  The 340 fan Drifters were  were 30 - 34 hp depending on the year.  The 34 hp is the 81 model.  The F/A Drifter I would think is the lightest sled they made also? I'm not sure about stock gearing or RPM.

Stock sled will only run about 55 mph top speed...  the 80' F/A is a great sled for the trails.  IMO the best Kawasaki for handling (not competitive for drag racing in stock form).  It needs a hp boost to be competitive.  I am currently fabricating a twin carb manifold for that engine.  Dry weight advertised at 365lbs.  The J/D Spitfires and newer Snofires ran the same engine...  and weighed in at 310lbs dry with direct drive.  Not sure of the stock rpm @ WOT...  my guess would be around 7000-7200.  Anyone who has ever owned one of the 80 F/A's would agree their handling was their strong point.     Tory

Thanx for the info and replies, this sled is going to be for my son so he can start coming to the races . I realize it might be a little on the slow side but will be a good starter sled, plus the cool factor, there wont be another one .I'll let you know how we make out, btw great site!

I've always liked the looks of the FA Drifters.  I thought wedging a 440 FA Kawi from a 75 Arctic Cat eltigre would make for a fun little sled.

I might be picking up an 80' Drifter F/A with an Eltigre quad plug F/A transplant very soon!  I'll keep you posted!

I have the parts to do the same thing, just having a hard time playing with my own stuff.

I agree, but when you have three of them it's not as difficult to get creative! ;D

Yup,   3 is better than 2 with most things.

So the guy with the two Drifters that I was supposed to buy (one with the Tigre engine) flaked out on me.  It seems the price changed once I arrived at his house...  more $$.  Furthermore, the picture he sent WAS NOT an honest shot and the second Drifter was supposed to be complete.  I guess if you consider a chassis w/no engine, hood or seat "complete" then....&%^&*((&........       anyway...  I offered him less for the first chassis minus the eltigre engine.  Better than nothing I guess.  It shouldn't be too difficult finding an Eltigre engine...  we will see!
