Third Times a Charm - Right
« on: March 08, 2015, 05:19:15 PM »
I got three runs under my belt on a new Intruder.  The sled starts hard though it has fuel and good compression.  Each of the 3 runs, after 5 or 6 miles she quits.  After she sits a bit she will fire back up.

One time it was dark and I didn't want to try to figure it out so we just towed it home.  Another time I thought she might have been too low on fuel, and by the time we fueled her up she started ok and then we put it away for the day.  Today she sat for 20 minutes or so while I went for a tow rope and when I came back she started up.  Now I am thinking it is probably the spark coil.  Any other thoughts?

Coil was my first thought too... maybe tank vent also.

 Mark

My Drifter used to do that. It was the coil on the stator. Ran great till it warmed up then just like you shut the key off.  walk home.. take a sled to tow it home.. get to the Drifter... pull rope ... drive Drifter home... walk back to get other sled..

Hmm remembering that....  I'd be 20 pounds lighter if I hadn't fixed it :)

Lloyd, that is interesting.  Oh, i forgot to say that i did change the stator plate after the first time it quit because of a melt down on the ground because of a poorly grounded starter.  I will have to look around to see if I have another spare set of coils.

Lloyd:

Swapped in a new spark coil earlier this week and tonight were able to take it for a good long ride.  We were just about to declare victory when she quit again.  A bit of inspection initially did not reveal anything unusual.  Then we noticed that part of the wiring harness was contacting the jackshaft.  Not enough light to confirm or deny.  Tied the harness up with a boot lace, fired back up and drove home.  Will need to do a bit more inspection in the clear light of day.

Rain today, so I am not sure that I will get to inspecting any closer until that clears up.

Still no good answers.  The jackshaft wore through the jacket outside of the wiring harness bundle but did not appear to abrade any of the internal wires.  So we are still left wondering what is up with this sled.

Our snow is melting rapidly.  As a result, this saga may wait to be continued next season.
