need help with invader 440 clutching
« on: February 15, 2017, 08:43:46 AM »
Hi, I just bought a 79 invader and am planning on taking it to some drags. As of right now I got the motor out and going through it plus doing all the seals. Gonna start by making sure it's running good. I'm planning on putting a 102c comet clutch on it and was wondering what spring and weights a guy should get to make it engage in that 4500 - 5000 rpm rang and rev out at 7900 - 8000 rpm. I know this stuff takes lots of trial and error to get it perfect but was hopping someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks

This is the recommendation's from Comet for a Deere Liquifire. Very similar engine.

Use the Liquifire  436.   B1 weights are hard to find. N weights will work.

This page has lots of info on the comet clutch.

I have little experience with comet clutched, but I have a good drag setup for the stock Kawasaki clutch that will get you what you are looking for.

The sled came with a power block clutch on it so if I'm gonna switch it sounds like the 102c is the way to go if I'm spending the money. But I would still like two know what you setup is. And dos anyone know what springs work in the 102c clutches other then comet springs?

Most of the Kawasaki's, including the Invader, use a rather unique negative offset of -0.200 inches in the drive clutch where the 30 mm taper begins to mount on the crankshaft.
Comet makes one for these sleds...model # 208306 with that exact offset.
The vast majority of clutches are "flush mounted"....millions of sleds are that way.
That means if you get a clutch with the common flush mount, it will sit 0.200 inches closer to the engine when installed....nearly 1/4 inch!
It will fit but I'm not sure you can move the secondary clutch in towards the center of the sled and maintain proper clutch alignment.
Maybe someone on here has used a flush mount Comet and can comment how it worked.
I think the Polaris P-85 drive clutch springs work in the Comet, too....but I'm not positive.
75 SnoJet Astro SS, 79 Kawasaki Invader 440 (two of them), 81 Scorpion Sidewinder, 82 Blizzard 9500, 83 Yamaha Vmax 540, 97 MXZ 670....and holding...for now.

I'm sure gixxer6 could help with the stock clutching if you want to go that direction.
Here's one on Facebook...stock clutches engaging at 5600... 8)

The 1980 John Deere Liquifire came with a 102C from the factory.  As Llyod mentioned, they have almost identical engines so the stock liquifire calibration should be really close, so a good used Liquifire clutch should be a good starting point.

I might have an extra Invader/Liquifire 102C if you are in the market?

Gixxer6. I'm curious to know what you did with the gearing or did you just leave it the same

Stock gearing and stock secondary.  I modified a set of E ramps to Aaen spec, and used a red Kawasaki spring.  Then adjusted the ramp weights until I got the desired max RPM, being the rest of the sled is stock-ish, 8,000 RPM.  I believe for me I ended up with stock ramp bolts with 3 thick washers on each.  This gave me a wicked launch, I don't recall the exact engagement rpm, but it made my Invader scary fast.  It's an excellent drag setup, but not very trail friendly.  I played with the clutch a lot, and ended up with stock.  I do keep a clutch setup with the Aaen weights in case I ever get someone that wants to race all I have to do is pop it on.

Ok I'll have to give it a try. I'm having problems with it having a bit of a bog right now coming out of the hole. So gotta get that figered out. I changed the main jets to 135s because I thought it was to fat. I'm wondering if that hurt it more than.  Anything

So how many grams of weight would the e ramps be with the washers in them about?
