Carb boots. I think I found the problem!
« on: December 07, 2017, 09:13:35 PM »
So.... I was having a issue after my rebuild and crank seals. 78 invader would start and idle on choke. But as soon as you turned the choke off it would rev up and die. Brand new Dennis Kirk carb boots by the way. Which after reading this form are junk. My dad told me to let it idle and spray crank seals, heads gaskets and carb boots. As soon as I sprayed the carb boot area it wanted to die! Stop spraying and it went back!! I’am really hoping this will fix my idle issue. Thanks For helping and letting me ramble on.

Careful with the "Mikuni" boots...I ordered a set of Mikuni boots, they came sealed in the Mikuni bag with the Mikuni logo and they were the same cheap junk that the aftermarket brand is selling.  I was shocked.  I had ordered the Mikuni boots in the past and they were real nice.  So far the only quality boot I have found that is consistent is the OEM Arctic Cat boots.

It's been several years since I bought them, but if I remember correctly I bought them from Dennis Kirk.

Most probably a fuel issue. I'd start with easy things first. Fresh fuel, fuel filter dirty, kinked hose, fuel pump hooked up correctly?
If all correct I'd suspect dirty carb, plugged jet, float set wrong.

New Mikuni fuel pump.  All new fuel lines. The fuel filter I have is a small lawn mower type from Home Depot. I wonder if I should change it.  And I’m probably taking the cards off again.  I’m just overlooking something. Grrrrrrr. Thanks for the reply

Boomologist mentioned several good things to try....It sure sounds like it could be plugged pilot jet circuits in the carbs.
Were you able to actually remove both pilot jets from the carbs?
It takes a small, straight blade screwdriver with a very good, straight tip to get them out without boogering up the straight slot in the tiny brass jet.
Often just blasting carb cleaner, or compressed air through these jets while they are still installed in the carb is not enough to dislodge the "gunk" that has built up in the passage below the pilot jet.
Your fuel filter is probably fine.
I would remove those pilot jets and blast carb cleaner through the passage...if you use the little red nozzle on the can of carb cleaner, you can direct the spray right into that passage. When the passage is clear, you can actually see the spray coming out into the venturi of the carb....wear some eye protection while doing this... 8)

75 SnoJet Astro SS, 79 Kawasaki Invader 440 (two of them), 81 Scorpion Sidewinder, 82 Blizzard 9500, 83 Yamaha Vmax 540, 97 MXZ 670....and holding...for now.

I would suggest determining the flow rate of the lawnmower fuel pump and compare that with the flow rate of the Kawasaki pump which is 16 ounces on 30 seconds.

Not a lawn mower fuel pump. Just a filter for a lawn mower

Oop's. Brain was somewhere else.
Most likely plugged jet issue.
