I spent yesterday and today going down a decidedly different bunny trail than I had originally planned for these last two days of the holiday week.
Yesterday I went into the shop fully expecting to insert the previously rebuilt Invader 440 engine into the new chassis. Upon pulling the engine out from under the workbench I quickly noticed that there were no electronics. Oye! Our collection of electronics is pitiful at best, so finding three parts that would work together to make spark turned out to be quite a challenge.
I swapped the spark coil onto our 78 and found that worked just fine - only have one of the wires on the 78's spark coil pull out and need to be repaired. I think that it was right then and there that I decided that I needed to build a bench tester for the electronics. What didn't hit me at first was how I would spin it. Then while driving across town on another errand it came to me that I could use the starter motor from an Electric intruder.
So this afternoon was spent building the Rube Goldberg tester. And after pulling the major parts I found out that the only electric flywheel that I had was on a recently rebuilt engine - also under the bench. But, in the interest of science and the desire to figure out which of these parts really work, I pulled it off to add to the tester. I have one more Intruder motor to check down at the machine shed to see if we really do have another electric flywheel.
After building the tester, and swapping some parts, I was finally able to make some spark. Progress at last.
But for the Kawasaki experts, do Invader and Intruder CDI boxes function differently? And if so, how do you tell them apart. None of ours have any legible markings.
