1981 Drifter 340 clutch
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:39:24 PM »
Hello Fellows.  I have a ?.  I just bought a 81 drifter. Motor needs rebuilt. Actually has a Kawasaki clutch on it but has different shaft compared the rest of Kawasaki clutches I have.  Clutch puller for interceptor/ invader wont work.  Do I need to use a puller that's used on the rest of the drifter that had arctic hex clutches? I uploaded a couple pictures. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you need the puller just for that clutch?

That is definitely a Kawasaki drive clutch in your pictures.
The 1st picture below is from a 1981 Drifter parts manual showing the attachment bolt with a single lockwasher.
The 2nd pic shows a 1979 Invader diagram that used 3 spring washers and a shouldered washer...same clutch, though.
You have the correct Kawasaki puller it looks like in your 1st pic.
Once you remove the attachment bolt and washer(s) there should be a large hole that the puller will easily fit through.
I don't understand what that rusty looking chunk of steel is that your puller is sticking into.....don't underestimate what a previous owner might have rigged up... ???
That shouldn't be there..

Here is a pic of a clutch with the clutch puller in place and engaging the internal threads in the clutch.
Attachment bolt and washers were already removed, leaving the large opening.

Really...I looked more closely at Parts diagrams and the inside of the Drifter does have a different end.

Yes shaft if different and no splines on the drifter spider either like the rest of kaw  clutchs.  Thanks for all the help and imput. I just wana make sure I order the right puller.   I always thought all kaw clutch housings inner and outer was the same. learn something new everyday ;)
