Next Sled in the Queue
« on: February 09, 2019, 05:48:35 PM »
Found a little free time before the sun set today to pull this beauty out of the machine shed.  Should be an easy build since the chassis is pretty much all together and there is an engine with NOS pistons and cylinders sitting under the workbench.  Don't be fooled by the cowling.  This sled was originally assembled as a display sled for my office - at least until some co-workers didn't think it quite fit in with the pool table and remote control airplanes.  And the hood, from a 79 340 was chosen because it looked decent.  The chassis is actually a 80 Intruder.  So, now she is getting an engine and will be added to the fleet.

That looks pretty good, is the speedo hooked up and how many miles??  I have noticed over the years that some speedometers don't work.

The odometer shows 1100 miles, and based upon the condition of the chassis, I believe this number to be accurate.  However the original engine was DOA with a rusted crank.  The engine pictured above was rebuilt with parts from other sleds along with the new pistons and cylinders.

Making some progress.  With any good fortune she should be running by nightfall.

Picked the nicest exhaust off the exhaust pipe rack only to find out that it does not fit properly.  Found one that fits but it has issues.  We have so many 79s that I  didn't realize there was a marked difference between the 79 and the 80 exhaust.

Pulled the plugs, spun the starter, the fuel pump primed the fuel lines.  Now we are getting pops.  No continuous firing yet.  More work to do.

Today is Sunday.  Spent a little time attempting to start this sled this afternoon.  It is popping a bit more reliably, but still will not run on its own.  With each pull she will bark about a dozen times but won't stay running.

She's Alive!

And I will admit that I feel like a bit of a goop.  The problem had to be either in the carbs or the timing.  Pulled the carbs and nothing obvious.  Pulled the flywheel and the key, rather than being in the keyway, was stuck to one of the magnets.  Put her back together and she fired right up and runs sweet.  Never had a  key go rogue on me before.
