A Secondary Issue is the Primary Problem
« on: March 12, 2020, 07:33:08 PM »
I continue to be surprised after wrenching on these sleds for so many years that I continue to learn new things.

It all started with the rebuilt 1980 Intruder.  When it came out of  the machine shed this year the secondary was frozen to the jackshaft and would not open.  Funny how that keeps the sled from making speed.  A little wire wheel and some oil makes a world of difference.

Then we get out on the lake with the 79 Intruder and it only goes so fast and no more.  Odd, but when we get it into the shop we find this odd ridge on the jackshaft strongly suggesting that the secondary was not able to open fully.  The shaft is now cleaned and oiled, but since we have not had snow for many moons it is hard to give it a test.  On the plus side I learned a little more about clutch alignment.  Just  hope I don't have to use that knowledge again too soon.

But then that takes me back to last season when the 78 Intruder would max out at 50 mph.  Pulled the sled into the shop last night and dog gone if that jackshaft wasn't goobered up as well.

Another interesting thing that I am noting is that there seems to be a theme here with the Intruders.  We have yet to have a similar problem with the Invaders.  But maybe they could use a once over just to be sure.

So, the long and the short of it is that since I don't already have enough sleds with problems we are heading out in the morning to pick up two more abandoned orphans.  Wish me luck.  No doubt I will be posting about them soon.

This thread is a little old, but since I have not had much snow, it has been a while since we have been able to test out the jackshaft rehab on the Intruders.  Yesterday's outing was fantastic, and I am pleased to report that both the 78 and the79 Intruder ran flawlessly and both hit comparable top speeds almost keeping up with the much newer 600 Skidoo.
