440 drifter starts then quits
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:48:44 PM »
440 drifter starts and idles. Once throttle is fully open machine will not move. Pick up the back end of the sled and the track moves, drop down on snow and it stops moving.
Is it carb problems? Or clutch?
If carb. Any manuals out there or pics for reference when I  take apart?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

could be an ignition issue or a fuel issue.

When it does is running off the stand does it smoke alot? This would indicate ignition ( robablly running on one cylinder (I have a 440 Drifter that play tis trick sometimes)

Or if there is not  lots of smoke it could be fuel. Try pumping the primer when it is bogging. If it gets better it is short of fuel, If it gets worse it's getting too much fuel

It chokes out when I prime it while running, so it is getting fuel. It does smoke when it starts. Would this be a cylinder problem rather than a carb/fuel problem?

Are both plugs the same color?

What do the plugs look like?

 Have you tried new plugs?

Have you checked the impulse line to the fuel pump. It is very easy to inadvertently pinch this line with an airbox spring (I would know). Had a similar sounding symptom on our 1979 Drifter 440. After replacing the crushed impulse line..........ZOOM!

So I cleaned the carb, started it and it runs. The minute I pull throttle it bogs down. I lifted the back of the machine off the ground and speedo shows up to 45 mph. As soon as I dropped it on the ground it bogs down again. Pulled both plug wires while running, and felt a shock on both so they are both getting power. Would it be plugs?
Would like to get it running for the kids.

I think you need to insure that you are getting adequate spark to both plugs.  Start with new plugs and remove both and ground them.  Pull it over and report back that you have or do not have a satisfactory spark at the plug.  You generally will not need to gap the NGK plugs assuming you do not drop them on the electrode.  Assuming you have a clean carb., I would lean tto a bad condenser, coil or one set of points being contaminated.  Check that spark in low light conditions and report back.

So put in new plugs this morning. Started and actually moved! Ripped around for about five minutes and then noticed hesitation on the throttle when I would give it gas. Carb has been taken off and cleaned last weekend. Had to stop cause of my sons hockey game.
Any ideas on the hesitation? Hoping to look at it later today.
