78 Drifter Running Good then Bogging
« on: February 12, 2013, 08:02:28 PM »

Hey guys ,I have a 78 Drifter that will start fine ,idle , and run ,but when she starts getting near top end ,it bogs bad and stalls. The carb has been removed and cleaned 3 times. The points and condenser cleaned. Timing set. Motor pulled and new cranks seals installed. All new fuel lines and filter. Removed the fuel pump and cleaned it. Tried different plugs.160 psi in each hole. Theres good spark getting to it. I'm stumped. It seems like it runs out of gas or stops getting spark. Any input would be appreciated.

You are running pig rich or lean at WOT.  Hope it is not the later of the two.

From 340 strange symptoms post, 10 Jan 2013, you posted one plug was white and the other looked fine.  Motor pulled and you put in new seals?  That seems reasonably possible.  Where did you order the seals from?

When you do a plug chop where is the soot line or the line on the ground strap?  Your motor is soon to check out and go to Kawasaki heaven without new seals.

Checkmarks. Your explanation is interesting. I don't know what to look for with soot lines. Ground strap? A friend had the seals in stock and he installed them. I can't think of a more qualified guy to do it. The new seals fixed the plug issues.
One thing done recently is a shut off switch installed. I could not find a proper ignition switch for it ,so an on-off switch was put in. We had to jump the wires on the ignition connection. This way I have lights and a kill switch. Do you think the sled could run for a while and then bog out because of the ignition switch?
I also can't find a wiring diagram for the circuit board to check if everything is where it should be. Faulty circuit board? Voltage regulator? uhg!!

If your sled is running up to near WOT then the problem is with fuel.  With a little more thought your sled is so lean that it stalls out.  Now that could be a fuel pump with a problem or too lean of jet.

Swap the problem (pump/carburetor) into another sled.

The soot line on a plug after a plug chop is a solution to calibrating the carburetor.  This also applies to the line that gets formed on a new spark plugs grounding strap.

(Do you think the sled could run for a while and then bog out because of the ignition switch?)  No
(I also can't find a wiring diagram for the circuit board to check if everything is where it should be.") If you were supporting member they have manuals accessible on this site.
(Faulty circuit board?)  No
(Voltage regulator?) When your lights bulbs start burning out, then think voltage reg.

Thanks Checkmarks. I'm going to try another carb on it and see what that does. New fuel pump kit as well.
