Is it OK to run LTD engine without coolant?
« on: April 09, 2013, 11:16:14 PM »
We currently don't have our radiator hooked up and are waiting to get it repaired/get a new one but want to run our engine to do a few tests and bleed the oil injection system, etc. Is this ok to do for a few minutes without any coolant in the motor (assuming of course that we monitor engine temps and don't allow the engine to overheat). Thanks...

You can bleed the oil injection by using a electric drill and the correct socket.  It works well.  I would vote no on running it for more than 30 seconds.

No you cannot run the motor without water/antifreeze.  Well maybe for a short period but then only until the motor comes to a screeching halt.  Then you have a motor that will cost you big bucks to get back to running.

You could bypass the 'mini' radiator with a hose.  Still before you close off the system put in fluid.  You could conceivable delete that radiator and still be able to keep the motor cool, provide there is plenty of powder snow to keep it cool.  This method would work for likely 30 minutes with out any additional provisions.  Then if you take a garden hose and run water over the heat exchanger it could run until you run out of fuel without issue.

Hard to monitor the motor temps as the factory gauge is dependent on coolant to transmit motor temps. If there is no coolant, the gauge won't work.
