If the lights burn out one at a time and change intensity with engine speed then I would suspect a voltage regulator problem.  If all the lights go out at once i would be more suspicious of a connector coming apart.  Either the 5 pin connector on the ignition switch or  the 5 in connector on the engine.  If wired correctly the tach is a direct connect to the 5 pin at the engine so if you were getting no tach readings it is more than likely that the engine connector wiggled loose or that one of the lighting circuit pins in the connector is not seated properly.  The engine will run with the connector disconnected but, if fully disconnected, will not shut off.

the 5 blade engine connector has a lot of corrosion problems that cause heat and melted sockets, esp. on the yellow wires, hard to get at under the radiator.... :-\

If the connector on the motor is disconnected, you won't be able to shut it off with the key or kill button.. Just sayin...

On a few of our sleds we have resorted to holding this connection together with cable ties.
