1980 440 Drifter Carb troubleshooting
« on: February 26, 2020, 10:32:10 PM »
Hello, I just finished putting back together a 1980 440 Drifter, it fired right up but then was having trouble with it dying, had to keep the choke on the first position to keep it running. I took the whole carb apart and cleaned it really good then put it back in and started it up and it did the same thing. Then I adjusted the air screw and got it to where it was idling great, thought I fixed the problem but now it idles fine but when you give it gas it bogs down and will die. Any help would be great!!!!

Do you see any air bubbles in the fuel line?

When were the crank seals last changed?

I just finished completely rebuilding the entire engine, including new crank seals. I think I may have discovered what the problem is, at least why it started bogging down after I took the carb apart, I'm pretty sure I put the needle in wrong and it's not sliding up and down. Hopefully that's it, but yes I did notice some air bubbles in the primer line, didn't look at the main fuel line though.

That's all it was! Works great now. One other question though, the fuel to oil ratio I found in the manual I have says a ratio of 40:1 for normal operation, I mixed a few gallons with a slightly richer ratio because I couldn't find anywhere in there where it gave the ratio for break in, anyone know?

Yes, extra oil in the gas for the first 2 tanks full.
